Vodka orginally was distilled from grain. Potato vodka came later. Vodka can be made from many things, as long as it is starchy, but grain is generally considered the best and most popular. It's a personal thing, but if you like grain, then look for rye, or wheat. They are the best.

I prefer potato vodkas, and vodkas snobs will tell you they are not the equal to grain based vodkas, but they are wrong. The best tasting vodka out there is potato based. It's Chopin. Many taste tests have been done and this one continually ranks as the best.

But, as I said it is an individual thing.

If you are going to go for the premiums, then don't mix them. Try it right out of the freezer over some fresh ice. Maybe a little tonic, or a squeeze of lemon and/or lime. Enjoy.

You know your Vodka! I goofed the other night. Ran out of Chopin and started on the cheapest vodka on the shelf. What a hangover, like I haven't had in AGES..

But how do you tell what the vodka is made from if they don't say on the front label?

I agree that Chopin (potato) is very good!!

What about three Olives--what is that from?

Not sure what to tell you about the labels, but you can probably google any one that you want to try and find out.

3 olives is a wheat vodka. My wife likes the 3 olives cherry vodka with diet coke.

After sampling lots of vodka brands over the last several weeks. I have come to Like 3 Olives Grape Vodka over a couple ice cubes alone as my favorite.

Haven't seen any other brands of grape vodka on the shelf yet.

Got a new one for you to try. IDOL Vodka. It's made from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes. Interesting. It's a good mixing vodka, but try it on the rocks. Pretty smooth and clean.

Not carried in Va ABC stores. At least not in this area. I asked one of the clerks there, said he'd never heard of it.

Like Idol, it is made from grapes. Good stuff, the French know their alcohol. It was the first Vodka to use cold fermentation. Really gives it a cold, clean taste.

This Ciroc is VERY VERY good! Best vodka tasted to date. Hard to imagine Idol tasting any better. Can you compare these.

Yep, that's why I asked when you brought up Idol. Ciroc is one of my favorite vodkas ever, but to me the standalone is still Ketel One.
